Basic information on seedling trays

2023-10-18

Plug tray, also called seedling tray, has become an important tool in the factory seedling production process. Whether it is flowers or vegetables, plug seedling cultivation is one of the most fundamental changes in modern gardening, providing a guarantee for rapid and mass production. The materials used to make plug trays generally include polystyrene foam, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride and polypropylene. The manufacturing methods include blow molding and injection molding. General vegetable and ornamental plant seedling trays are made of polystyrene.

The hole shapes of seedling plug trays are mainly square and round. Square holes generally contain about 30% more substrate than round holes. The water distribution is also more uniform, and the seedling root system is more fully developed. The size of the standard hole tray is 540mm×280mm. Due to the different hole diameters, the number of holes is between 18-800. For cultivating medium and small seedlings, plug trays with 72--288 holes are suitable.

The color of the seedling tray will affect the temperature of the plant roots. White polystyrene foam discs are highly reflective and are often used for early seedling raising in summer and autumn to reflect light and reduce heat accumulation at the roots of seedlings. In winter and spring, choose black seedling trays because they have good light absorption and are beneficial to the greening of the seedling roots. After the seedlings grow up, you should start using the root-controlled rapid seedling cultivation technology and move them into a root-controlled rapid seedling cultivation container to continue growing.
